Check off 2014...

We all return from Winter Holidays on Monday, January 5.

We are closed for the MLK Holiday Monday, January 19.

 From the Director's Desk:

A lot has happened here by the creek in the past year. Highlights include the conclusion of work and final inspection allowing us to use the whole Norwood House. We had planned to use some of the new space to house an infant class, but county and state government inflexibility made it impossible. Changing courses, the Board, just this month, approved the re-creation of a middle school class for the 2015-16 school year. Here is a link to the introductory powerpoint discussing the program (click on 'present'). And now, speaking of the Norwood House and our facilities...

To summarize what I like to call the 'well nightmare' (as it is what keeps me up most nights), the state Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources required us to drill a brand new well to replace our two perfectly functioning wells. It has just gotten uglier and more ridiculous from there. The current estimate to meet the state's wishes is around $70,000 in equipment, plus maintenance costs year in and year out. The current cost of our perfectly functional wells is about $100/year for filters plus the cost of our bottled water BECAUSE WE DON'T EVEN DRINK THE WATER. Ah, government. We are currently researching ways to get our costs down for the new system, because we can't pay $70,000 without ruining the school financially. On the only bright side, we have a letter from DENR saying that we can stay on our current wells for as long as it takes to get the new system online.

But other than that, the school is in the best shape ever physically and financially. Our teachers are awesome and working like a well-oiled Montessori machine. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE TEACHER APPRECIATION FUND. WE RAISED OVER $2,500, ALL OF WHICH WENT TOWARD TEACHER BONUSES FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Before we take a look at what's been going this month, I just want to take one more moment to remember and thank Dr. Ann Norwood, the first Director and primary founder of Mountain Pathways who passed away this year. WE APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR US. WE WOULD NOT BE HERE WITHOUT YOU, DR. NORWOOD...

Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes, dress or undress himself, reflects in his joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence.

'Magnificent Things' Happening in 6-9

The Six to Nine class has been exploring Design Thinking after reading the book The Most Magnificent Thing written by Ashley Spires about a little girl and her dog who build their most magnificent thing.
Along this educational journey we learned important words like, Perseverance, Imagination, and Empathy to come up with our magnificent things.

“Design thinking is basically a methodology that allows people to have confidence in their creative ability.” (David Kelly, inventor of the computer mouse and tons of other cool and useful ideas like “Design Thinking”). Check out their website to learn more about Design Thinking.

Scenes from the 3-6 Class....

If education is always to be conceived along the same antiquated lines of a mere transmission of knowledge, there is little to be hoped from it in the bettering of man's future. For what is the use of transmitting knowledge if the individual's total development lags behind?   --MM
